This international project, developed on the scope of the 2nd URBAN-NET Call, looks forward to identify the adverse effects from climate change manifestations in some European urbanized areas with diverse geographic, historic, cultural, social and economical characteristics – Gothenburg, Frankfurt and Porto.

The project is coordinated by the Professor Sofia Thorsson from the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) and developed in partnership with our research group (CHE RG) and researchers from the Department of Architecture and Planning from the University of Kassel (Germany).

Taking into account the various projections for the average air temperature rise in Europe, between 2ºC and 6ºC until 2100, it is predictable that this change may generate thermal contexts which can be adverse to human health and well-being. More so, given the impulsive characteristics of the climatic system, this rise in average air temperature in the next 100 years will occur, in reality, at a very irregular rhythm with a higher frequency of extreme heat and cold episodes.

Knowing that the majority of the population, of the world in general, and Europe in particular, will continue to prefer to accommodate in urbanized areas and that this type of space organization creates conditions towards the appearance of positive thermal anomalies by increasing the energetic inputs of anthropic origin and by preventing energy outputs, it is urgent to re-equate the way people are distributed, as well as their activities in this type of spaces, otherwise the effects in quality of life, health and well-being of the human beings will be undesirably amplified.

The intensification of stress caused by heat in urbanized areas is already widely recognized, however there is not yet a local and regional climatologic knowledge transfer into urban politics. And, it is the purpose of this project, from 3 case studies in diverse climatic contexts, to measure and demonstrate the mitigation effects that urban design – the volumetry from buildings, the width from streets, the type and density from vegetation, etc. – can have in minimizing the negative impacts from air heating in human beings.

The research consortium includes scientists from the areas of urban and regional climatology, geography, biometeorology, health, environmental engineering, landscape architecture and urban and regional environment.
