The need to create an Early Warning System and Risk Communication Plan (EWSRCP) emerged under the scope of the Project Projeto Risks for public health caused by heat waves and cold spells in the area of Porto (2008/2012 PTDC/SAU-ESA/73016-2006) and was accomplished in the master dissertation entitled Theoretical foundation towards the creation of an online alert and response system during extreme thermal episodes of extreme heat for an healthcare unit from GMAP.
For the design of the online Early Warning System (EWS) during extreme thermal episodes of extreme heat for an healthcare unit at the Great Metropolitan Area of Porto (GMAP) all the theoretical base needed was redefined, concerning the definition of climatic risk of levels for human health.
The implementation of the EWS is waiting for the necessary protocol requisites in order to activate all the procedures where it is necessary to articulate a multidisciplinary team – climate, meteorology, health, etc – which in real-time assesses the georreferenced information bank of the target population and the weather forecast to be able to issue, in time, adequate alerts for all targets.
