During the course of this Project, the purpose was to achieve:
1st Identification of risks and environmental impacts generated by the urbanization process, whose effects are reflected in the “(un)sustainability ” of the natural environment and worsening of the “quality of life” and “well-being” of people from Porto;
2nd Comprehension and evaluation of some effects caused by urbanized areas in Climate, Air Quality and in the residents’ Health;
3rd Identification of some mitigation measures to minimize, either the negative impacts on the Environment, either the social and economic costs for society.
The achieved results in concerning the effects that a development strategy, such as the one implemented in Portuguese urban spaces during the last 25 years, may signify in terms of impacts, firstly in the Ecosystem and in the maintenance of a minimum desirable equilibrium between several environmental components and, posteriorly, on the success of the proper development intension, it seems to still be far from that which should be needed to know, in order to provide decision makers with more adequate alternatives concerning the objectives of sustainable economic development.
